“The bayonet, model 84/98 (a new type), has been manufactured since 1915 and was originally intended for arming cavalry, technical troops and field artillery. In the same year, it was decided that each combat engineer company should have 10 bayonets of 84/98 model or kS 98 in service, since the bayonets of models S98 and 98/05 that were in service with the infantry were too long to be effectively used in trenches and in night outings. At the beginning of 1917, the bayonet of the 1884/98 model entered service with the assault units. In the 1920s, the 84/98 model bayonet was adopted by the Reichswehr (such bayonets are identified by the stamp “1920” or “1921” located on the cross), along with the model 98/05 bayonet, from May 27, 1923 it became the main Reichswehr bayonet and then the main Wehrmacht one . In addition, the bayonet of the 1884/98 model (a new type) was in service with the armies of a large number of European and Asian countries, to which he got as a result of the division of trophies and reparations after the First and Second World Wars, as well as a result of the sale of decommissioned army property.

When adopted by the Reichswehr, the bayonets from the First World War era were fitted with slots in the heads of the screws holding the handle sidepieces, and the buttons of the spring clips were often upgraded in the same way. Since 1932, bayonets have been blued. Since the end of the 30s, bayonets with handle sidepieces made of bakelite were produced. The sheath has also been changed, the main modernization of which was a change in the way of attaching the estuary, the bayonets produced after the First World War had it attached to the screw located at the side, not in front.
