The bayonet, 1905 model, was used with the Springfield 1903 rifle. Initially the rifle was equipped with a bayonet-rod, but because of the bayonet’s fragility it was decided to develop a bayonet with a knife-shaped blade. The 1905 bayonet was developed on the basis of the American 1892 bayonet and the Norwegian 1894 bayonet for the Krag-Jorgensen rifles. The 1905 bayonet was produced from 1906 to 1922.
In 1942, the production of bayonets of 1905 was resumed. The bayonet was modernized and became known as the “1942 model bayonet”. The modernization of the bayonet was to replace the wooden sidepieces of the handle with plastic ones.
